Sodium chloride (hypertonic) ophthalmic is a topical medication used to reduce surface (corneal) swelling of the eye in cats and dogs. Sodium chloride is available without a prescription but should only be used under the direction of a veterinarian. It may be used “off label” or “extra label” to treat eye conditions in animals other than cats or dogs. Sodium chloride (hypertonic) ophthalmic comes in ointment and liquid drop form. Avoid use in animals with corneal ulceration or dry eye.

Sotalol is given by mouth or injection and is used off label in dogs and cats to treat abnormal heart rhythms. The most common side effect is tiredness.

Soy protein is given by mouth and is used over the counter to treat many conditions such as urinary incontinence, certain cancers, inflammation, obesity, and diabetes. Side effects may include gastrointestinal signs, or allergic reactions. Do not use in pets that are allergic to it, or in pets that are pregnant or nursing. If a negative reaction occurs, please call your veterinary office.

Spinetoram topical (brand name Cheristin®) is an insecticide used to prevent and treat flea infestations in cats and kittens. Avoid use in dogs. It comes in a liquid drop form.

Spinosad (brand name Comfortis®) is an antiparasitic used to kill adult fleas and to prevent and treat flea infestations in dogs and cats. It may be used off label (extra label) to treat other parasites and in other animals. It comes in an oral tablet form.

Spironolactone is given by mouth and is used off label to treat congestive heart failure, fluid accumulation, and other cardiovascular problems.

Spironolactone + hydrochlorothiazide is a combination aldosterone antagonist (spironolactone) and thiazide diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide) used to remove excess fluid and salt from the body in cats and dogs. This medication can be used in combination with other drugs to lower blood pressure and for protective effects on the heart muscle. It has also been used in dogs with fluid-up in the abdomen due to liver failure.

St. John’s wort is given by mouth and is used over the counter to treat pain, depression, anxiety, and other conditions. Give as directed by your veterinarian. The most common side effects include gastrointestinal upset, sun sensitivity, skin reactions, allergic reactions, dry mouth, or restlessness. Do not use in pets that are allergic to it, pregnant, nursing, very young, or very old or debilitated. If a negative reaction occurs, please call your veterinary office.

Stanozolol (brand names: Winstrol®, Menabol®, Neurabol®, Stanol®, Stromba®, Stombaject®) is an anabolic steroid that no longer commercially marketed in the US. It is currently used off label as a compounded medication to treat weight loss, anemia, poor appetite, and other issues in pet animals (not farmed animals). It may be effective in treating tracheal collapse in dogs.

Stasis Breaker is an herbal blend used in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) to reverse blood stagnation and improve circulation in dogs, cats, and horses. It is often recommended for the treatment of cancers that are in the form of a nodule or mass (solid form).
